In 2021, the giant social media conglomerate Facebook Inc. underwent a major rebrand decision where it became Meta Inc. This transformation sparked massive waves of confusion for the company’s millions of users: Why did Facebook change to Meta? In this article, MKT Software will break down why Facebook Inc. rebranded to Meta and what happened in the years that followed.

I. When did Facebook change to Meta?

On October 28, 2021, Mark Zuckerberg released an announcement during the company’s annual Connect conference. According to transcripts of the event, Zuckerberg introduced the concept of the Metaverse as the next evolution of the internet.
We believe the Metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet. We’ll be able to feel present like we’re right there with people no matter how far apart we actually are. We’ll be able to express ourselves in new, joyful, completely immersive ways and that’s to unlock a lot of amazing new experiences

The Connect 2021 event also highlighted early steps toward this vision, including the introduction of Horizon Home, VR support in Messenger, and future initiatives such as Quest for Business.

II. Why did Facebook change to Meta?

The decision to rebrand to Meta was driven by both strategic ambition and structural necessity. At a structural perspective, the company sought to reposition itself beyond social media. While Facebook Inc. was considered one of the most influential social media companies in the world, its brand identity remained tied to said platforms solely. In the age where competition is getting tougher everyday, it was crucial for Facebook Inc. to establish a wider identity.  This shift was closely aligned with Zuckerberg’s ambitious vision for the future of the Metaverse. Just as Facebook’s early advantage in social networking sites, Zuckerberg aimed to replicate that first-mover advantage by investing early in emerging Metaverse technologies.

III. What happened after the rebrand?

So what were the outcomes of this bold decision? Following the 2021 announcement, four major developments emerged as part of Zuckerberg’s plan.

3.1. Massive investments into Reality Labs

Following the rebrand, Meta significantly increased its investment in Reality Labs, the division responsible for developing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. It is estimated that since its establishment, Zuckerberg has invested over $80 billions into Reality Labs, supporting research and development in immersive technologies. This level of dedication helps reinforce the Metaverse as a key strategic pillar for the company.

3.2. Development of Metaverse products and platforms

As part of this strategy, Meta introduced and expanded a range of products designed to bring the Metaverse concept to life. This included Meta Quest VR headsets, which serve as the primary access point for virtual experiences, and platforms like Horizon Worlds, where users can interact and explore virtual spaces with one another. These products were positioned as early building blocks of a broader ecosystem. However, while the technology demonstrated potential, it remained in relatively early stages of adoption.

3.3. Unsatisfactory public response

Despite the scale of investment and product development, public adoption of Metaverse technologies was slower than anticipated. It was reported that despite having 300.000 monthly users when it first launched, Horizon Worlds struggled to maintain engagement, with active users dropping significantly to only 900 within the first month. The gap between technological capability and user demand also became a key challenge in Metaverse development. While there were some interests, the majority of common people didn’t seem to express much enthusiasm towards the idea of immersive technologies

3.4. Shift towards Artificial Intelligence (AI)

In early 2026, Mark Zuckerberg released another statement where he announced the company was moving on from its Metaverse-centric strategies. While the technology showed great prospects, Zuckerberg realized too late that the current level of infrastructure and technological developments weren’t advanced enough to reveal its vast potential. As a result, the company incurred significant financial losses, ultimately prompting a strategic shift in focus. Instead, Meta began investing more heavily in AI technologies, viewing it as a crucial component in advancing its original vision for the Metaverse.

IV. FAQs

In both cases, Zuckerberg’s decision caused massive confusions, both when he decided to rebrand Facebook Inc. to Meta Inc., and when the company is backtracking on said rebrand. To help shed more light into the matter, below are our answers to some frequently-asked-questions regarding Meta’s (then Facebook’s) short-lived Metaverse era:

4.1. Is Meta taking over Facebook?

The answer is No, Meta is not taking over Facebook in the sense of replacing it. Instead, Meta is the parent company that owns Facebook, along with other platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp. The rebranding from Facebook to Meta in 2021 was primarily a structural and strategic shift that led to the change in company name.

4.2. Is Meta losing users?

Currently, Meta is not broadly losing users across its entire ecosystem, but it has experienced shifts in user behavior and growth patterns, particularly on Facebook. In 2022, Facebook reported a slight decline in daily active users for the first time in its history, signaling saturation in certain markets and increasing competition from platforms like TikTok.

4.3. What is the Metaverse?

The Metaverse refers to a network of immersive, interconnected digital environments where users can interact with each other and digital content in real time, often through avatars. Unlike traditional internet experiences that are limited to screens, the Metaverse aims to create a more immersive and interactive space using technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

V. Final thoughts

While Meta has adjusted its current focus, it does not mean the company is abandoning the Metaverse entirely. Instead, it is strategically pausing its efforts to invest in advancing key technologies, such as AI, that are essential for supporting complex systems like the Metaverse.
